Flatfoot Clogging Workshop with Evie Ladin on Sept. 28

Clogging Workshop on Sunday, September 28 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm

In this mixed level clogging class Evie will offer something for every level – both in footwork and choreography – dancing with a partner and in groups.  An experienced and patient teacher, Evie is adept at both breaking down rhythms to their basic components, and building complex patterns.  Her primary goal is for every level of dancer to enjoy dancing, gaining fluidity as well as understanding a percussive dancer’s role in the music.

Evie Ladin is a banjo player, step-dancer, singer, songwriter and square-dance caller with a lifetime of experience in traditional American cultural arts. The polyrhythmic funk of her clawhammer banjo, resonant voice, real stories and rhythmic dance – have been heard from A Prairie Home Companion to Celtic Connections, Lincoln Center to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Evie started playing banjo at the age of 8, clogging since 5, and has a fluid expressiveness in these traditional Appalachian arts, even as she brings an urban edge and contemporary vision. Based in Oakland, CA, Evie tours solo, duo with Keith Terry, with her expansive stringband Evil Diane, and with Keith Terry’s projects – she is the Executive Director of the International Body Music Festival since 2008.  Evie has 2 solo CDs, 3 CDs with the Stairwell Sisters, 2 with Crosspulse, plus two instructional DVDs Buckdancing for Beginners and Part Two: Freestyle. Evie teaches banjo, harmony singing and percussive dance, and calls rowdy square dances in the San Francisco Bay Area when you can find her there. Her live performance is a demonstrative, delightfully gorgeous storm.

Tickets for this special class are only $20

Come to the concert of Evie Ladin & Keith Terry on Friday, Sept. 26 and Evie Ladin’s Clogging Workshop on Sunday, Sept. 28, and pay only $30! (Concert tickets here.)

City Stompers members who have prepaid for classes may use two credits for one event, or three credits to come to both events.

Evie Ladin & Keith Terry in Concert on Sept. 26 at 7:30 pm

Energetic and electrifying clawhammer banjo, bass, percussive dance, storytelling songs old and new, with nuanced, emotive vocals. An intimate, robust evening of acoustic music and dance, a skilled hybrid of American folk arts. The polyrhythmic heat of Evie Ladin‘s clawhammer banjo, resonant voice, real stories and rhythmic dance – have been heard from A Prairie Home Companion to Celtic Connections, Lincoln Center to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Known as a driving force behind San Francisco’s Stairwell Sisters, Evie’s solo debut Float Downstream (2010), co-produced by Mike Marshall and Keith Terry, was quickly followed by Evie Ladin Band (2012), which won Americana Album of the Year by the Independent Music Awards Vox Pop Vote.

Keith Terry (bass, Body Music, percussion, vocals) is a renowned percussionist/rhythm dancer, and the founder of the International Body Music Festival. A pioneer in contemporary Body Music, Keith produces large-scale intercultural collaborations and educational outreach. In the DUO, Keith brings a cinematic ear to playing bass as tonal percussion, with bells, box, body and toys. His CDs and instructional DVDs are released by Crosspulse Media.

Using any surface for its rhythmic possibilities, Terry claps his hands, rubs his palms, finger-pops, stamps his feet, brushes his soles, slaps his butt and belly, pops his cheek, whomps his chest, skips and slides, sings and babbles and coughs, building his music out of a surprisingly varied register of sounds and clever rhythmic variations. –VILLAGE VOICE
